Stuart Broad said changes to the world cricket calendar could mean he will be the last pacemaker to take 500 test wickets. Broad hit the all-time record by catching Kraigg Brathwaite in a weight plumb bob as England completed a dominant 269-race victory in the third Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford on Tuesday that saw the hosts win a 2-1 series victory. . Broad, 34, is only the seventh bowler in history to have taken 500 test wickets and the fourth fastest.
When Fred Trueman became the first man to take 300 test wickets in 1964, England's noted fast bowler, asking if anyone could break his record, replied, "Yes, but whoever does will be very tired."
Broad, whose one-day international career was effectively ended by England in 2016 to keep him on the proving ground, said scheduling would now be the problem for a fast bowler who wants to join him in the '500 club.'
"Someone will have to play cricket a lot because there is a lot of competition, between different T20 league franchises, 100 balls."
Broad, who also scored his 140th Test with a 10-67 streak, added: "I feel very lucky to have played for England in an era where we played a lot of test cricket in the summer and a lot in the winter.
"I think there is talk of reducing the number of Tests we play in one summer."
Among active players, only Australian Nathan Lyon, with 390 test wickets, seems to have high hopes of becoming the eighth member of a select group.
