West Bengal Congress President Somen Mitra died in a city hospital in the early hours of Thursday. She was 78 years old.
Sources at the private hospital where he was admitted said that he died of heart and age-related diseases.
"He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago after his creatinine level was found to be high during a routine checkup. He was a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and also had other age-related conditions." said a senior hospital official.
Somen Mitra died around 1.30 a.m. after cardiac arrest, hospital sources said, adding that she had tested negative for COVID-19.
He is survived by his wife and son.
According to a family member of the congressional leader, he was taken to the hospital a few days ago for a regular health checkup.
Somen Mitra had undergone bypass surgery a few years back when he was a deputy for Lok Sabha.
