US Fixated With Huawei, Should Focus On China's Expansive Ops: Report

NEWS

Washington: The Trump administration in recent weeks appears to be obsessed with just two Chinese companies: TikTok and Huawei, a Washington-based panel of experts said, while suggesting that the United States should focus more on the expansive operations of Chinese state-owned companies. . companies that quietly dominate the global infrastructure, telecommunications, transportation, energy and financial services sectors.
While these companies undoubtedly raise clear and important concerns, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said the US should demonstrate greater strategic maturity if they focus equally on the operations of China Communications Construction Company, COSCO Shipping and State Grid.

"When the United States pays attention to the global architecture of China's rise, such as the Belt and Road Initiative or the Digital Silk Road, they learn the wrong lessons, immediately entering conversations on how to" match "China's efforts," Jude Blanchette, President of Freeman in China Studies at CSIS, said in the report.

"The United States will never be able to replicate China's ability to deliver the entire financing, construction, labor and technology value chain to the nations of Africa and Latin America at the scale and speed they demand, so why try when the United States just being a poor imitation? China's global influence, while widespread, is fundamentally weak, and it relies primarily on its checkbook and ability to apply specific pressures. "

"Rather than simply reflecting China, a better approach would be to play with America's own significant strengths, which are much more robust and durable," added Blanchette.

The report says the United States alternates between two formulations of Chinese power: it is on the verge of collapse or it is about to dominate the world. But both views are misleading and counterproductive, according to the report.
