Live Updates: Rajasthan Cabinet Meets to Discuss Next Course of Action Latest

newsNEWS

Rajasthan Prime Minister Ashok Gehlot called a meeting of the council of ministers at 12:30 p.m. to rework the proposal for the state governor to request that he convene a session of the assembly.

Gehlot had chaired a cabinet meeting at his residence on Friday night, ending a long day of great drama in which Gehlot and the MLAs supported him by protesting for more than four hours at Governor Kalraj Mishra's house, accusing him of sitting at request to call an assembly session because he was "under pressure" to stop a test of force.

During the meeting that took place after midnight, which lasted almost two and a half hours, the cabinet discussed the six points raised by the state governor regarding the convocation as a session of the assembly.

Governor Kalraj Mishra has not called the session despite Mr. Gehlot's requests. On Friday, Gehlot and more than 100 supporting MLAs protested for more than four hours at the Governor's house, accusing him of attending the request to call an assembly session because he was "under pressure" to stop a test of force.

However, the governor said he needed the state government's response at a few points before making any announcements, claiming that Gehlot had not given any "justification" or "agenda" to convene the session in such a short time.

Ashok Gehlot, 69, is doing his best for a test of strength after Sachin Pilot and other congressional rebels threatening his government obtained a postponement from the Rajasthan High Court on Friday.

Congress has a limited advantage over the opposition and has only passed the 101 majority mark in Rajasthan's 200-member assembly. Team Pilot claims the support of 30 MLA, but so far, the evidence points to only 19. The BJP has 72. Including smaller parties and independent members, the opposition is 97 at the moment.
