India Tells US Tax On Google, Amazon Not Biased, No Rethink: Report

NEWS

India's decision to impose a tax on companies offering digital services in the country is not directed at any particular country and the decision will not be reconsidered, people with knowledge of the matter said.

The decision was relayed to the United States Department of Commerce, which launched an investigation alleging that the South Asian nation was targeting companies like Amazon.com Inc., Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, the people who asked said no dating rules were identified to speak to the media.

India's position on the levies comes as the two nations engage in negotiations to achieve a limited trade agreement with the ambition of a free trade agreement in the future. A similar dispute in France led the US to impose 25% tariffs on a series of French products worth about $ 1.3 billion last week.

An out-of-hours call to the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson was not immediately answered, while the United States Embassy in New Delhi referred the query to the office of the United States Trade Representative. An email sent to a USTR spokesperson for comment received no response.
