England Cricket Great Ian Botham To Be Made A Peer: Report

News

England's great cricketer Ian Botham will be named Lord by Boris Johnson as a reward for his support of Brexit, according to a report published in The Times. The newspaper said Botham would be among the 30 new colleagues announced by British Prime Minister Johnson to celebrate his first year at 10 Downing Street.

Botham, one of the best cricketers with 5,283 tests and 383 wickets, publicly endorsed the Brexit campaign and appeared alongside Johnson before the 2016 referendum that saw the British vote to leave the European Union.

There were no immediate comments from Downing Street.

Botham, 64, is officially known as "Sir Ian" after Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2007 for charity services, he has raised millions of pounds, primarily for leukemia research as well as cricket.

Being a partner would mean that Botham became a member of the unelected House of Lords, one of the two houses of the British Parliament along with the democratically elected House of Commons.
