On Saturday, the AIIMS Ethics Committee gave its go-ahead to a human clinical trial of the locally developed vaccine candidate COVID-19, Covaxin, after which the first hospital is likely to begin the exercise by recruiting healthy volunteers from the Monday.
AIIMS-Delhi is among 12 sites selected by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to conduct phase I and II human Covaxin trials. In phase I, the vaccine would be tested on 375 volunteers and a maximum of 100 of them would be from AIIMS.
"The AIIMS Ethics Committee gave its approval to start the locally developed Covaxin human clinical trial today. Healthy volunteers with no comorbid conditions and no history of COVID-19, over 18 years of age and less than 55 years old would be eligible. participate in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, "said Dr. Sanjay Rai, a professor at the AIIMS Center for Community Medicine.
"Few volunteers have already registered for the trial. We would begin screening the individuals and assess their health status starting Monday before vaccinating them," said Rai, who is also the study's lead investigator.
Anyone willing to participate in the test can send an email to Ctaiims.covid19@gmail.com or an SMS or call 7428847499, he said. The institute can also put these contact details on its website.
According to Rai, the Ethics Committee had raised few concerns in the protocol presented to carry out the trial.
"Those concerns were addressed to the following, which the EC gave its approval to begin the trial by the first institute," he said.
