Coronavirus update: India records 31,787 Covid-19 cases, death toll rises to 1,008. State-wise tally

  1. Currently, there are 22,982 active Covid-19 patients in the country, while 7,796 people have been discharged or cured
  2. Maharashtra continued to be the most affected state with a total number of positive coronavirus cases at 9,318 while the death stands at 400




Plasma therapy not approved

“There is no approved therapy for Covid-19 in the country including Plasma therapy. Plasma therapy is being experimented with and there is no evidence to support it as a treatment. It is only at an experimental stage. If not used properly, it can create life-threatening complications,” said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary health ministry.

The health ministry official said that the country’s top medical research body was conducting a study to find out the efficacy of plasma therapy and till then, doctors are advised to use it only for trial purposes.

“Plasma therapy is only to be used for research and trial purposes until an ICMR study on its efficacy is completed. ICMR is conducting a nation-wide research to study the efficacy of Plasma therapy,” he added.




India green-lights UAE, Kuwait request for ex-military doctors, nurses

Kuwait was the first one to seek Indian medical assistance earlier this month when Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah called Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian Air Force had then flown a 15-member military rapid response team.

As this team was wrapping up - it returned on Monday - New Delhi received the request for more medical teams. “They were very impressed with the rapid response team,” an official said.


Other Gulf countries have also sounded out New Delhi that they would need Indian medical assistance and are expected to send formal requests shortly.

In response to these requests, the top official said, “an in-principle decision has been taken to allow retired military doctors, nurses and technicians to travel to UAE and Kuwait to begin with”.

        The number of corona virus (COVID-19) hot spot districts in India as on Wednesday morning has come down to 129 from 170 a fortnight ago, but in the same period the number of infection-free districts or green zones too decreased from 325 to 307, according to official sources.


        29 fresh COVID-19 cases in Rajasthan, total stands at 2,393

        Rajasthan recorded 29 fresh coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 2,393 in the state, an official said.

        The state has so far witnessed 52 deaths due to the virus, with Jaipur accounting for 27 deaths.

        The region is a "vaccine manufacturing powerhouse" with "the quality and scale required to produce and roll-out a Covid-19 vaccine globally", said Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the regional director of WHO South-East Asia.

        "It must now also play a lead role in overcoming the ongoing pandemic," she said.

        Countries like China and US are spearheading the global vaccine initiative, but South-East Asian nations aren't far behind.
