Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said Friday that state police were able to investigate the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case, a claim that comes in the context of a growing clamor for a CBI investigation into the death of the actor in June.
He said that people should trust the investigation of the high-profile case being carried out by the Mumbai police.
Lately, there has been a growing demand from certain sectors to turn the case over to the CBI, but the state government has repeatedly insisted that the Mumbai police were able to handle the matter.
"The state police and the Mumbai police are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. They are COVID warriors and not trusting them is an insult to them," he said.
"I would like to tell Rajput fans to trust the Mumbai police and give them whatever information they have. They can criticize if the case is not brought to its logical conclusion," he said.
Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found hanging from his apartment in the Bandra suburbs on June 14. A Bihar police team is investigating a separate "suicide incitement" case based on a complaint filed by the father of the late actor in Patna.
Thackeray lashed out at opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis, saying the BJP politician had doubted the credibility of the Mumbai police to handle the case despite being a chief minister for five years.
The prime minister said he was not concerned with the stability of his government as long as he enjoyed the support of the state people and Shiv Sainiks.
"The BJP says our government is against the mandate. Then it is destabilizing democratically elected governments, a mandate," he asked.
Thackeray, who is also president of Shiv Sena, spoke at an event hosted by a Marathi news channel.
