Trump Calls For New Death Sentence For Boston Marathon Bomber

News

United States President Donald Trump on Sunday called for Boston Marathon attacker Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to be sentenced to death again after an appeals court overturned the death penalty.

"Rarely has anyone deserved the death penalty more than the Boston Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev," Trump tweeted.

"So many lives lost and ruined. The Federal Government must again seek the Death Penalty in a postponement of the original trial. Our country cannot let the appeal decision remain," he added.

Tsarnaev, 27, was sentenced to death in 2015 for planting two homemade bombs near the race's finish line in 2013, killing three people and injuring 264 others.

He admitted to carrying out the attack when he was 19 years old with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died four days after the atrocity in a shootout with the police.

Citing in particular neutrality issues in the jury selection process, a federal appeals court in Massachusetts confirmed most of Tsarnaev's convictions on Friday, but ordered a district court to hold a new trial in sentencing to determine his fate for the crimes that carry the death penalty.

Regardless of the outcome of the new trial, Tsarnaev will remain "confined in prison for the rest of his life," the three appeal judges said.
