Paul Stirling insisted that he always believed Ireland could beat England after its brilliant century inspired a record Irish run in a surprising seven-wicket victory over world champions during the third international day in Southampton on Tuesday.
Both Stirling, at 142, and Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie (113) scored centuries during Ireland's successful 329 chase. It was Ireland's most successful chase at ODI, after they hit a target of 328 in a dramatic 2011 World Cup victory over England in Bangalore.
However, when Stirling and Balbirnie came out in quick succession, it looked like Ireland might fail, but Kevin O'Brien, their one hundred hero in India nine years ago, helped them achieve victory in the company of international rookie Harry Tector with just One. ball to spare.
