More than half of the approximately 9 million British employees who were suspended during the coronavirus lockup have already returned to work, the Resolution Foundation expert group estimated on Saturday.
Britain's Ministry of Finance has said that payments totaling £ 32 billion ($ 42 billion) have so far been made in respect of the 9.5 million jobs accumulated, but does not release figures on the number current number of workers without permission.
Based on an analysis of household and business surveys by the Office for National Statistics, the Resolution Foundation calculated that the number of laid off workers is "certainly less than 4.5 million" and possibly as low as 3 million.
The leave plan began in conjunction with the closure in March and will end in October, after which many economists fear unemployment may rise sharply, exceeding the peak seen after the financial crisis.
Official data on Thursday showed wide differences across sectors, with more than 90% of information technology and unsuspended sewer workers, but nearly half of staff in the hospitality, arts and leisure sectors still need help.
"These workers face an increased risk of unemployment as the Job Retention Plan begins to be phased out," said Resolution Foundation economist Dan Tomlinson.
