The world's largest economy also added 53,847 new cases of the virus, according to the Baltimore-based institution's tracker at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Wednesday).
The United States has registered a total of 4,765,170 cases with 156,668 deaths, making it by far the most affected country in the world.
But President Donald Trump adopted a decidedly optimistic tone.
"We are seeing signs that our strong mitigation efforts are working very well, actually, especially to protect those who are most at risk," he said during a White House press conference addressing the pandemic.
