The Bahujan Samaj party has flogged its six MLAs in Rajasthan to vote against Congress if a floor test is conducted to verify the strength of the Ashok Gehlot government. Gehlot has been fighting to keep his government afloat after a rebellion by Sachin Pilot and loyal MLAs.
All six MLAs of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had merged with Congress, which could lead to a tangle of technicalities since, by this definition, there are no MLA BSPs in the Rajasthan assembly.
The party led by former Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Mayawati had approached the Electoral Commission to consider these six MLAs as MLA BSPs during the Rajya Sabha polls, but the Electoral Commission had refused to intervene in that since it is the domain of the President.
On Sunday afternoon, the BSP issued the whip to R Gudha, Lakhan Singh, Deep Chand, JS Awana, Sandeep Kumar and Wajib Ali.
"Notices have been issued to the six MLAs separately and collectively, indicating that since BSP is a national party, there can be no state-level merger at the instance of the six MLAs, unless there is a merger of the BSP in a National level. If they violate it, they will be disqualified, "BSP national secretary general Satish Chandra Mishra told the ANI news agency.
In a second proposal to Governor Kalraj Mishra for convening an assembly session on July 31, Gehlot said the agenda is the coronavirus pandemic. The governor rejected the first proposal, noting that he did not mention a date or reason for the assembly session.
Winning a vote of confidence will give the Ashok Gehlot government a break for the next six months. But if a vote of confidence is held now, when the 19 rebels have not yet been disqualified, the rebels can vote against their own party. Even if they are disqualified later, their vote will count.
