US Maintained "Close Contact" With India On Chinese Aggression: Envoy

NEWS

Washington: The Trump administration has maintained close contact and "tremendous cooperation" with India in the latest Chinese border aggression, said the top US envoy in New Delhi, stating that the past six months have been unprecedented in terms of the bilateral relationship.
Troops from India and China locked themselves in a clash in various areas along the Current Line of Control in eastern Ladakh since May 5. The situation deteriorated last month after clashes in the Galwan Valley that killed 20 members of the Indian Army staff in the line of duty.

"For now, (we are) looking at the problems on the northern border of India where China has raised disputes across the western sector, but also in the center and east. During all of this, we have had very close contact with our counterparts. India and, frankly, tremendous cooperation, "US Ambassador to India Ken Juster said Wednesday in his speech to the Virtual India Ideas Summit organized by the United States Indian Business Council.

The ambassador's remarks came two days after US Defense Secretary Mark Esper described the Chinese military's aggressive activities in the region as "destabilizing."

Esper also said the United States was monitoring "very closely" the situation between India and China along the Current Line of Control.

"We have seen after the (India) visit of the President several additional conversations between the President and the Prime Minister. The (State) Secretary has spoken on numerous occasions with (Foreign) Minister Jaishankar. I think it has really solidified their relationship, "said Mr. Juster.

Assistant Secretary of State Stephen Biegun has spoken not only with Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shringla, but with a number of counterparts in the Indo-Pacific region, he said.
