Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal today vetoed the Arvind Kejriwal government on the panel of lawyers to represent the Delhi Police in cases related to the February riots in the capital.
The lieutenant governor signed the six-member panel recommended by the Delhi police, which includes attorney general Tushar Mehta and additional attorney general Aman Lekhi, two days after the Aam Aadmi party government (AAP) rejected him.
The Delhi government is bound by the constitution to accept the decision, sources close to Baijal said.
Delhi police, reporting to the Union Interior Ministry, recommended the panel on July 10 to combat 85 cases related to community violence in northeast Delhi, in which 53 died and more than 200 were injured.
Recently, a Delhi High Court judge accused the police of "misusing the judicial system" and taking the "transportation system," after which AAP raised questions about the lawyers recommended by them.
