India's Daily COVID-19 Tests Up To 4.2 Lakh Amid Alarming Infection Rate Latest

NEWS

India, the third most affected country in the world coronavirus count after the US and Brazil, has gradually increased its COVID-19 testing capacity and conducted more than 4.2 lakh tests in one day, said Saturday on Union Ministry of Health, attributing the increase to the number of laboratories for the achievement. Development occurs even as the country struggles to reduce the rate of spread of the infection, which remains nearly twice as high as the United States and Brazil.
When the outbreak began in January, India, a country of more than 130 crore people, only had a laboratory equipped to perform the COVID-19 test. But within six months, the number of laboratories certified to perform the coronavirus test has increased to 1,301. This also includes private laboratories that have purchased test kits and have joined the fight against coronavirus.

The country is also experiencing a steady increase in Testing per million (TPM) with an increase in the number of laboratories and the adoption of the center's "test, follow-up and treatment" strategy. With 4,20,898 samples analyzed in the last 24 hours, Tests per million or TPM increased to 11,485 and continues to maintain an upward trend, the ministry said.

However, the milestone occurs when India's daily percentage increase rate in coronavirus cases was 3.7 percent, compared to 1.7 percent in the United States and 1.9 percent in Brazil. At this rate, India could overtake Brazil in about a month and the United States in just over two months.

As of Friday, more than 1.58 million rupees of COVID-19 had been made in the country. The 3.5 lakh tests are now carried out every day for the past week, the ministry said.

"The Union government has advised all state and UT governments to maintain the 'Test, follow-up and treatment' strategy with aggressive tests that may lead to a higher number of daily positive cases initially, but that would eventually achieve a decrease as demonstrated after the targeted efforts of the central government in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, "the ministry said in a statement.

With the increase in testing of coronavirus samples, the death rate dropped significantly to 2.35 percent on Saturday and the recovery rate increased to 63.54 percent. "India has one of the lowest death rates in the world," said the health ministry.

The downward trend in the death rate indicates that the collective efforts of the UT center, state and governments have helped control the coronavirus death rate, he said.

With 8.49,431 recoveries, the number of recovered cases has outnumbered active cases by 3.93,360.
