Twitter Tests Feature That Stops Sharing Links If You Haven't Read Them
Twitter said Wednesday that it was testing a new feature that seeks to limit the exchange of articles by users who have not read them.
The feature, which asks users if they've read an article before retweeting it, appears to aim to delay the dissemination of unverified information.
"Sharing an article can spark conversation, so you may want to read it before tweeting it," the Twitter support team said.
Twitter said it would test the feature on its Android app "to help promote informed discussion."
"When you retweet an article you haven't opened on Twitter, we may ask you if you want to open it first," the company said.
In a response to a user, Twitter noted, "We wanted to try a way to improve the health of a conversation when it starts."
But he said that users "will always have the option" to go ahead with the retweet.
Twitter and other platforms are struggling to contain misinformation, which is often relayed by users who do not check the details of the comments they are sharing.
