A massive attack, described as "a coordinated social engineering attack" by Twitter, targeted multiple high-profile users last night, including former United States President Barack Obama, Tesla's Elon Musk, investor Warren Buffet, and Jeff Amazon bezos. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey responded to the attack this morning, saying it was "a difficult day for us on Twitter."
"We all feel terrible that this has happened. We are diagnosing and sharing as much as we can when we have a more complete understanding of what exactly happened," Dorsey tweeted.
In an extraordinary move, Twitter disabled validated tweet accounts for about two hours after scammers tried to trick people into sending bitcoin cryptocurrencies hijacked users' profiles.
A tweet that appeared in Elon Musk's feed read: "Happy Wednesday! I am returning Bitcoin to all my followers. I double all payments sent to the Bitcoin address below. They send 0.1 BTC, I send 0.2 BTC back!" The offer was valid "only for 30 minutes".
