Airlines are asking their customers for help as they face paying customers for flights canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic that could deprive them of cash, the industry said on Wednesday.
"We are asking for help from passengers ... that is true, and we are doing it on our knees," Alexandre de Juniac, head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), told the French radio and television station BFM Business. .
Coronavirus blockages forced most flights to stay on the ground, and air travel is slowly recovering, putting airlines in a dangerous financial way.
Airlines operating flights to and from Europe are supposed to reimburse passengers for flights canceled within two weeks under EU law, but with the support of France and other countries, airlines are offering coupons or causing customers sometimes wait much longer to get their cash back.
Consumer groups have yelled and the European Commission has opened a case against 10 EU member states, including France, for not enforcing regulations.
