Expressing concern over China's "aggressive behavior" in territorial disputes, including with India, a senior US senator said Tuesday that Beijing has often tried to "redraw" the map of Asia without regard to its neighbors.
Troops from India and China have been locked in more than eight weeks of fighting in various areas in eastern Ladakh, including Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley and Gogra Hot Spring since May 5. The situation deteriorated last month after clashes in the Galwan Valley that left 20 Indian armies. dead personnel as the two sides significantly reinforced their deployments in most areas throughout LAC. The incident at Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in northern Sikkim on May 9.
The Chinese military began withdrawing troops from the Galwan Valley and the Gogra hot springs after national security adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held lengthy talks on Sunday. Doval and Wang are also the special representatives in the border talks between India and China.
"As India and China work to disconnect along the Current Line of Control (LAC), I remain deeply concerned about China's aggressive behavior in territorial disputes," said Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez, a senior member of the powerful Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate.
"From the Doklam clash of 2017 to the recent violence along the borders in Sikkim and Ladakh, to China's new claims on the territory of Bhutan, Beijing has tried to redraw the map of Asia regardless of to your neighbors, "he said.
