"We Could Have Done Much, Much Better": Amitabh Kant On Migrants Latest

downtown

The government, downtown and in the states, could have done much more to care for migrant workers who have had a terrible time due to the national COVID-19 lockdown, Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog said on Friday. .
Crimes of migrant workers, who work in factories, construction sites and brick kilns across the country, were left without food, shelter or income when the central government announced a sudden national shutdown in late March, two months after the Coronavirus pandemic will strike India.

Earlier this month, after thousands of migrants made their way to their village on foot, producing disturbing images of pregnant women and exhausted children walking on the country's roads, the central government agreed to operate special trains and allow buses to transported.

Speaking to NDTV, Amitabh Kant, executive director of the government's think tank, said that while the blockade had been successful in controlling an even more widespread virus outbreak, the migrant worker crisis was poorly managed.

"It is important to understand that the migrant problem was a challenge because over the years, we have created laws that have brought large numbers of informal workers into the economy," she said.
