A day after Karnataka Law Minister JC Madhuswamy was seen abusing a local female leader on video, Prime Minister BS Yediyurappa rebuked his former cabinet colleague, saying his behavior was "unfit for a minister." Madhuswamy, for his part, apologized but said he had reacted to his "bad behavior".
On Wednesday, Madhuswamy, who is also the Minister for Minor Irrigation of the Department of Water Resources, was heard abusing the district president of the Kolar Karnataka Farmers Association, Nalini, in a clip broadcast on local news channels. The woman had gone to meet the minister to present a memorandum to eliminate the invasion of a lake.
In the video, Mr. Madhuswamy is allegedly heard saying, "Shut up, you rascal." She is also heard saying that he is a "very bad man" and that she must voice her complaints and not rule. When Nalini questioned the minister's behavior, the police officers on duty asked him to leave to calm the situation. The incident occurred when the minister was inspecting a project in Kolar, some 65 km from Bangalore.
"What you did was wrong. I have warned you. The use of abusive language against women is unforgivable. This type of behavior is inappropriate for a minister. I learned about it after reading the newspaper. I will speak to the woman in question. Yes if incidents occur in the future, I will take strict measures, "Yediyurappa told reporters on Thursday.
However, Madhuswamy told reporters that he would apologize if he has hurt any woman's feelings. "When an individual spoke across boundaries, as someone who respected himself, I reacted. If the wording is wrong, I apologize ... the way he behaved was very bad. I shouldn't have used (the words) either. ... "I spoke as I did because I was intimidated," he said.
